Showed up at 1878 on friday and just missed the ford bronco sideswipe a parked car, then drive through a chain link fence and smash into a house that was being built two houses down. Good thing too, because I pulled up right behind the car that got tagged. Twenty minutes earlier, and it would have been my car.

Studied through saturday, taking in the world cup background style, had some drinks with J&D, then hit up shelter with kev. I'd never been there before, and it's basically a mini version of vinyl, not surprisingly as it's also owned by the soco club mafia. We camped out on the rooftop and had a great time taking in the unfolding of things. After sunday's crazy world cup matches, we celebrated lauren's b-day at the red lion. I had the venison.

Swung by the gothic tuesday night with robert to hit the sold-out sonic youth show list stylee. Didn't want to bother with taping, so we were able to take in the show from the right side balcony. The youth came correct, playing pretty much the entire new disc, with a few wicked oldies peppered in. Mark Ibold formerly of pavement helmed bass duties on the night.

wasssupdate

Slack updates on my part, but there hasn't been too much to keep you up to date on save for laboring away at my studies. I did head to the boulder theatre with robert and angie friday to catch the eric bachman / neko case show. Eric was great, and nico would have been more easlily enjoyed if we could have sat down somewhere. That and if she didn't have militantly boring fans. We split the show early on in her set and headed to trilogy where we livened up the mood right. We left as it was getting crowded, split back to my hut, and half-watched repo man. I was pretty much out of touch the rest of the weekend, save for father's day festivities, because I dropped my celly into a glass of water. It has since dried out and is back to its old self.

reev yoos

peaches - Impeach My Bush: Well, she certainly isn't the least bit subtle, and I guess that's her schtick. But as schtick goes, it works best in tiny doses, kind of like very small rocks that float.

hidden cameras - Awoo: Caught somewhere between the beach boys, rem, and the wedding present, all in a very urgent fashion. I almost kicked this one to the curb, but made my way through its entirety this morning hoping to find something akin to the bridge from 'I want another enema' from their last disc without having to listen to the asinine(!) chorus. It comes close enough.

portastatic - Who Loves the Sun: Simple sounding score to the film of the same name which I have yet to see. As with most score, the songs are far too short and underdeveloped without visual aid. But at least this gives Mac a chance to develop his arranging skills until we wait for the next portastatic or, with any luck, superchunk disc.

yo la tengo - I Am Not Afraid of You and Will Beat Your Ass: You better come correct with an album title like that, and as usual the yo la pretty much do. Unfortunately this isn't slated until an early fall release, so what I have in my hands is sort of a sampler, in so much as the songs are mostly complete, except for what seems like the last minute of each song. So I can vouch for about the first 80% of each song sounding pretty f-in good.

selector 23 - handpicked dub june 2006: Please don't fuck with the selector while he is selecting. Number two in an as of yet un-numbered monthly series of hand picked dub podcasts (clicky to subscribe). Some vocals seep through on this one, giving it a more rootsy feel than its predecessor.

study break

I rode my bike to the hill:

on the way there

Grabbed a table on the patio at the sink:

My partners in crime for the evening:

the ladies

Tried a new kind of beer, which was a pretty tasty dark ale:

Destination - the fox for a sold out show:

the venue

Lady sovereign opened the night, and boy was she drunk. The altitude nailed her. She blagged just about every tune, forgetting lines and just screaming a lot. It eventually turned into S.O.V. comedy hour as she just talked card shit to the crowd:

lady miss cant hang in the altitude

Ah yes, and then the streets hit the stage. I caught 'em a few years back, and they were great then, but I may have to be so bold as to say they were even better tonight. Spot on with everything, we even heard some brief covers by the artic monkeys, pussycat dolls, and jimi hendrix sneak their way into the set. Everyone up front got free brandy during that one track about brandy, including the girl who mike convinced to snowball her friend with the shot she just took:

mike et al

Everyone else seemed to be enjoying themselves as well:

p.s. The arctic monkeys still suck.

eurostash

Meant to take it easy this weekend, but as weekends go, you really have to just embrace them as they slowly unfold. The original plan was a mere study break bbQ at jacq & dylan's, which progressed to hitting up pearl street for some rhumba mojitos. Heidi & her roomy crew joined us for a spell, before we headed off to meet up with shannon's bachelorette party, who had passed by earlier and informed us they were heading to the new boulder jaunt, 7 euro, for continued festivities after their dinner. By this time we had also connected with kevin & laura. The ladies crew created the dance party that soon ballooned throughout the room. There were some live drummers on hand (eerily reminiscent of nomenclature) that began to overpower the soundsystem unless you were in front of the speakers, one of which was turned inwards as a makeshift monitor. The place has potential, and the coolest co-ed sinks in town.
Stopped in at trilogy which was packed, so we didn't stay too long. I heard lerr was there, it would have been hilarious if I'd seen her! Sunday was back to the books, as has been the past couple of nights, and early mornings. On the plus side I've been watching less crap tv.

still birth of slick

Ludacris and Kanye Pest won their copyright infringement suit last thursday after a jury decided that their song "Stand Up" had not borrowed lines from the New Jersey group I.O.F.'s (It's Only Family) song "Straight Like That." The premise of the
case focused on the phrase "like that," which is featured in both songs more than eighty times, preceded by "straight" in one and "just" in the other. This begs the question as to whether or not the Digable Planets are going to weigh in and try to cash in against all these clowns. And for that matter, Public Image Ltd. should raise objection that they all ripped of their tune which is straight up just called 'like that'.

selector 23 - handpicked dub: Bobble is back under his alter ego, and comes correct with a handful of dubalicious choons on the way chill tip. Hoo-rah!

graham - house of dub: Serving as a solid soundclash champion companion piece to the selctor 23's offering, we have graham's latest mix of dub infused house. Woot!

keene brothers - Blues and Boogie Shoes: One part genius, one part audio pac rat, Robert Pollard returns with three seperate releases, all under different pseudonyms. To save you the hassle, you shouldn't bother with the other two (Pyscho and the Birds & The Takeovers). Out of the three, this is certainly the most accessable, and also my favorite, so there.

xiu xiu - The Air Force: Do these guys try this hard to suck so bad? This is as exciting as watching mud dry.

mission of burma - The Obliterati: I'm not afriad to admit that I never liked these guys the first time around even though they were somewhat required listening for the boston music scene. But because they were locals, they were also easily dismissed as a local band. My copy of vs. quickly became a coaster. After all we had the Bosstones, Pixies, Dinosaur Jr, Gang Green Sebadoh, and Slapshot to listen to if we wanted to bask in Beantown pride. Re-united in 2004-ish, this is their second 'post-hiatus' album. Decent stuff for all you revivalists.

tosca - Souvenirs: Leaps and bounds better than last year's JAC, the album which features the originals to this album full of remixes. This is more in the vein of how the past two tosca full-lengths should have sounded. "You're a philosopher?"

jamie lidell - Multiply Additions: You guessed it, jamie hands us a bunch of extras to bookend the very well received multiply. Unlike the tosca remixes, these remixes and a couple of live cuts do little to eclipse their predecessor, which is perhaps for the best.

keane - Under the Iron Sea: Not to be confused with the aforementioned keene brothers, we have just plain keane, who are still hopelessly stuck in limbo between coldplay and pablo honey. Darker, and a hinting at a bit more depth, this is certainly a step up from their debut.

the sleepy jackson - Personality, One Was a Spider One Was a Bird: Sophomore set from these aussies is top notch. I've only listened through once so far, and it's already made it into my car. Maybe because it has some latter day mercury rev sounding elements, which I am a total sucker for.

junior boys - So This Is Goodbye: There was a lot of fuss surrounding their debut and although I enjoyed it, I was not particularlty amazed by it. Their follow up is also enjoyable but hardly amazing.

week l o n g

This past week has been fairly nonstop. Took a breather from schoolwork at the pool this afternoon (class started up again on wednesday). So let's see, where did we leave off? I think I'll start with last friday, the morning of joe B's arrival from nyc. On the way back from the airport we hit up some lunch on the hill, then picked up some of the last minute items for our camping trip. Dylan and adam convened at my place, and once jacq arrived we all headed to denver to pick up angie on route to guenella pass, where robert was waiting at the campsite he had scooped up before the memorial day rush. He scored a sweet spot by the river and had set up a pretty swank area by the time we arrived. We were straight up car camping this one - coolers, lanterns, hammocks, boom box, a pop-up, etc. The usual campout shenanigans ensued for the next two days - plenty of food, beers, hikes, horseshoes, cards, a soundclash, and so on.

hey joe

We headed back to civilization early sunday. That afternoon, joe and I hit up pearl street, which was much abuzz with bolder boulder related events. After a rooftop bacaro session, we had hoped to catch the season finale of the sopranos. Much to our chagrin, memorial day weekend was reserved for reruns, so we headed to hapa for a fine sushi dinner. Monday we checked out the bodyworlds exhibit in denver, wishing we had that frisbee from camping since we got there too early. Had lunch in cherry creek, shopped a bit, then met up with devin, kim, eric, and gloria at the new lola's location in lohi (for real - lower highlands). It was $2 taco / $1.50 modelo night. We made it home for close to six hours, and it served as a fine final event before we parted ways at DIA. It was great to see joe again!

Kicked myself for missing the ILYBICD show at the hi-dive with kevin on tuesday. I was "BEING RESPONSIBLE" since class started the next day and we already had an assignment due. For everyone I complete, there's another one to do...
