chunky

I forgot to participate in Record Store Day this year, but luckily a friend of mine snagged me a copy of the signed Superchunk 7" picture disc. It's from their contribution to the ATHF movie soundtrack, 'Misfits & Mistakes'.

hey ya yeasayer

It was rainy and cold all week, and I had a lingering cold to boot. I was finally feeling better come saturday though, so I racked my current batch of beer. I left it in the primary fermenter a week longer than I'd planned mainly because I had not gotten around to picking up some dry-hopping hops. I added a 1/2 oz of Simcoe and a 1/2 oz of Amarillo which should give it a nice mix of pine & citrus. I also added oak chips at this stage to give it a cask-aged like quality.

After racking and cleaning up, I brought my car in to get the brakes fixed. We picked it up and then headed down to Monument for Steph's nephew's first communion. Shortly after the ceremony, we drove back to denver and grabbed a quick bite at the Atomic before we walked over to the Bluebird for Yeasayer. Another sold out show, but at least this wasn't all ages - it certainly filled up though. Sleigh Bells all but stole the show with their 30 minute onslaught. Just guitar & vox with a drum machine backing tape, but they blew the roof off the place.

Yeasayer were no slouches, however. A heavy psychedelic vibe purveyed throughout their set, brightening up every now & again for the fruitier, 80's dance tracks from Odd Blood.

Hard to make out clearly, but the mostly bass player on the left in the wife-beater looked just like Biff.

Sunday morning Steph had the ladies over for a clothing exchange, so I rode my bike over to hillside and wound up looking through old family photo albums looking for old pictures of the Culps. When I returned, I cleaned off the back porch, Steph planted our veggies, and we watched Breaking Bad & the Pacific. RIP RV.

car troubles

Brought my car in friday for a transmission flush and to fix the AC, and returned with a laundry list of other items needin fixin - front brakes/rotors, cv joints, tires. All of which I'll roll out incrementally over the next few weeks in order to ease the financial burden.

Saturday I chillaxed with Ruggles most of the day. Later that evening we christened Jacq & Andy's new hut and dubbed it 3959. We didn't hang out too long since there was no furniture and we had a party to attend - some friends from the ladies' running group. Hung out for a while, but called it a relatively early night since Steph had to cycle in the AM.

Sunday afternoon I flipped between the Rockies & Red Sox games - both ended up losing. Afterwards I got some fresh air in the form of a jog. For dinner we tried out Smashburger, which was mighty tasty but greasy as heck. Adding bacon to my mushroom swiss burger prolly didn't help.

majah lazooooor

Worked a trade show at the convention center on tuesday. It ended at 3.30, and we had booked a room at the Curtis right across the street, so I headed over there and chilled at the bar for a minute waiting for Stepha & Greg to arrive. We had dinner a few blocks away at Pizza Colore, then headed over to Cervantes for the sold out Major Lazer show. The place was nuts - all tickets were will call, so that was a bit of a cluster as well. The show was all ages, and was very rave-esque in that aspect - young 'uns behaving erratically.

We camped out near the back bar - where there was a little more breathing room, and hey, you're conveniently located by the bar. A couple of local djs opened, then Rusko laid down an hour plus set of some nasty dubstep before the Lazer hit the stage.

I believe only Diplo was there with their wild hype duo, no sign of Switch - I could barely see the stage. Nonetheless, it was an extremely high energy performance - great fun! Wednesday was a bit of a chore, even after some Santiago's breakfast burritos.

kristin & the big pink

Friday we met up at Brasserie 10/10 for some happy drinks in celebration of Heidi's b-day. Steph had to cut out a bit early for swimming. After the 10/10 happy hour ended, the ladies were off to some more bar hopping, but I headed back to milo to cook up a za.

Saturday evening we headed over to the nook for a final round of drinks. We had planned on going to a last minute party at Heidi's house afterwards, but wound up just chillin' at the nook.

Sunday I went for a run around waneka, then watched the rockies game. Later on the fam met up at Bacaro for dinner with Kristin who was in town on business.

I had to leave a bit early and head to the Bluebird for the Big Pink show. A Place to Bury Strangers opened, and it was a mouthful of sound, and lots of smoke. I was standing right next to where they packed up all their gear after their set, and they were just jamming pedals, electronic drum pads, projectors, and whatever else into suitcases and bags - it was fairly comical how completely unorganized they seemed.

The Big Pink delivered yet again, and we got a longer set this time, possibly because they started on time. They threw in a b-side and a new track as well. I am rather looking forward to a follow up album soon.

A full day & night, and was home in bed by 12.30 - sweet!

easter ipa

With my first batch all bottled up, it was time to get started on another. Cracked a PCP in celebration and brewed up a batch of Octane IPA on saturday. After some consideration, I realized that with the dry-hopping, and quick primary fermentation time frame of the PCPs, that the batch was more along the lines of a black ale, so I renamed them to PBA (Preo's Black Ale). Still damb tasty, with a nice crisp finish.

After a full day of brewing, I chillaxed and watched the Butler game. We tried out the Empire Lounge in Louisville for dinner - good homestyle cooking.

Sunday we had easter brunch at hillside, I provided the gang with samples of the PBA and it was a hit. After brunch, we headed down to Monument for Gretchen's easter dinner, and played a bunch of Rock Band with Steph's niece & nephew. Got back to milo in time for the Red Sox / Wanks season opener. A great way to start the season - Steven Tyler, Neil Diamond, and a come from behind victory!
