shot to the moon

A promotional stunt for the new Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie went horribly misunderstood in Boston today, shutting down portions of the city for what was believed to be a bomb scare.

What's even sillier is that initially reports from law inforcement blamed the incident on sponge bob square pants. Apparently no one that came accross the devices is very hip.

I can hardly wait for the movie!

day at the creek

Headed to Beaver Creek on saturday with steph and dylan. We've been getting tons of snow in town lately, but not much of it has been hitting the mountains, so we spent most of the day on a quest for powder, which led us through aspen glades and out of bounds. Later that night we met up with some of steph's former co-workers at the rio. From there we hit the walrus, then as usual ended up at trilogy. I tried to get some x-country ski action on sunday, but the snow was kind of sucking at north boulder park, so I went for a jog around mt. sanitas instead. Stewie and Brian made their way into colorado later that night.

bikes & trikes

So I got one of those bike cradles that attach to the back of your bike and it essentially makes a stationary bike so you can kepp up with exercise in the winter months. I really got the thing cranked up on wednesday, making a bundle of noise which I was kind of drowning out with the ster-e-ero. After I finished I heard knocking on my door, and the downstairs neighbor looked kind of perplexed and asked me if I was running some sort of motor. Apparently the thing was sending some massive vibrations all through her pad. Looks like I'll be sending that apparatus back to REI.

Class started up again last night. we had a smaller class, 7 including me. there were 3 women from my economics class, and I alomst paired up with them for our group assignments, but they actually meet in person on the weekend to do work at atlanta bread company or something awfully laborious sounding. So I teamed up with the new folks who were more hip to online interaction, closer to my age, and generally cooler anyway. There's the philosophy major/former elementary school teacher, the ad exec chick, and ajaz - the arabic engineer. We call him the jazz man.

wednesday tune reviews

dean & britta - Back Numbers: The dynamic dating duo that used to be one half of luna has returned with their first post-luna album and second overall. Think of it to sound just like luna but mellower (if you can imagine) and with britta taking part in some of the vocal duties.

rjd2 - The Third Hand: Mr. RJ has taken a stylistic leap away from the hip-hoppiness of Since we Last Spoke and opted for some sort of indie-pop-rock type dealio here. The music's great, the singing is not.

the good, the bad & the queen - s/t: Not content to rest on his Gorillaz laurels, damon albarn returns along side studio-whiz dangermouse, paul simonon of clash fame on bass, the guitarist from the verve, and a drummer. Stylistically, it's signature albon, oddly moody, and mostly about the city of london. No guest rappers, not very dancey, and not seemingly pop-radio-friendly, you probably won't be hearing this one piped over the tin can soundsystem at the mall, even though it's a way better listen than the played out gorillaz vibe.

Remember Vice magazine? I occasionally forget, having not seen a printed ep since leaving the ATL, but thank goodness they still have some funny content online.

weekend round-up

Had kind of a cold all week which came to a head friday night, so I dosed up some nyquil and called it a wash. Had originally planned to hit the slopes saturday, but slept right through the morning. Caught the Colorado Symphony performing Bartok's The Wooden Prince later that evening before synching up with everyone else on pearl street for some good ol' fashioned drinks & dancing at trilogy, somehow later the euro7, and eventually making snow angels on the walk home. Sunday we had brunch and watched the playoffs on the projector over where heidi was housesitting.

a kid preo escape

Hola again,

As promised, you can now download the new Beach Front Property podcast with a clicky. Today's episode is an old mix I just stumbled upon that I had made shortly after moving out west. Most of my tunes were still packed up, so it was made with whatever I had lying around.

Ripped as one track at high quality 192vbr - do enjoy!

LS

The latest school stabbing happened at Linclon-Sudbury highschool, the town right next to where I grew up. Our high schools were sports rivals. LS is also where They Might Be Giants went to high school. Their album, Lincoln, is a reference to their hometown, and not good ol' Abe.

reviews are piling up

clap your hands say yeah - Some Loud Thunder: CYHSY are still essentially a talking heads knock off, but they do fill that void quite nicely. Even though this album sounds as if many of the instruments were recorded through mud, these guys manage to avoid the sophomore slump with a pretty decent follow up to their much lauded self-titled debut.

idlewild - Make Another World: You hear one song and it's pretty good, then the next one's not, and so on with apparent influences seeming to be the bunnymen & rem and of course never quite matching up to either.

air - Pocket Symphony: French music is so all over the map, even when dealing with the same artist. Digging on their earlier releases, I was really apalled by the inane lyricism of talkie walike, of course english not being their first language and all, they probably thought they were being poetically profound while singing about 'surfing on a rocket'. I'm not quite sure what they're singing about on this disc since the vocals serve the role of an accompanying instrument somewhat buried in the mix. And this album is chill, way chill, flowing quite nicely as the potential backdrop to an afternoon nap.

!!! - Myth Takes: I almost didn't listen to this because their last album was awful. This new one is more honed, and turns out to be a serving of pretty catchy dance punk stuff that's all the rage in your fashionable and/or trendy nightclub of choice these days.

the earlies - Enemy Chorus: I really dug their last long player, these were the earlies which was culled from various previously released EP's. Debut full lengths for bands that thrive in the EP world can be hit or miss, and upon first listen I dismissed this as the latter. It all seemed too grandiose and bourgeous at the same time, but then I had a change of heart over breakfast this morning deciding that was indeed an interesting sound to get hung up on.

high llamas - Can Cladders: Cool breezy pop, but the singing is a little too fluffy & cute for my liking.

the broken west - I Can't Go On, I'll Go On: Some good tracks and some boring, I won't go on...

just add whatever

mlk weekend

Packed in the voit and headed to frisco friday evening. We had a condo at our disposal for the night. Derr & kerl were in town and met us all up there. We made a good dinner, and then wound up playing kings with beer not meant to be consumed so quickly. Rode keystone on saturday. Split up with the rest of the crew who were staying another night then headed to denver to grab some dinner at the hornet with robert & angie. Sunday was kind of wash, we had more snow, but it was way too cold to x-country. The weird thing was that it was much warmer in the mountains. Watched the second pirates of the carribean dvd and of course the division playoffs - go Pats! I had to work yesterday, so it wasn't really a holiday weekend.

another one down

I just finished up another class last night, and celebrated with some jamaican food fair at the hand of stephanie, who additionally was able to replicate the bridgetown grill's famous black and white soup. I have a brief reprieve until my next class, so it's time to tackle all the other things that have been languishing on the backburner.

Opted to forgo the mountains this weekend, so I could stay on top of the schoolwork. Lucky for me since there were all kinds of silly things going on like avalanches, whiteouts, and drifting snow really messing up traffic. Saw children of men on friday which was good but not great, it kind of reminded me of 28 days later without all the zombies. The best part was the Animals album art cameo in the scene with dudes brother (if you ever watch it, you'll understand what I mean). Hit up valmont park for a few hours of x-country skiing on saturday, and had brunch at the edgewood ladies hut sunday.

no repeats

More *SNOW* today in boulder being carefully crafted by the little dudes at the factory known as the sky. We got a bunch last night and are expecting more all day for a total of ~10 inches. The snow doesn't normally stick around this long with our close proximity to the sun and earlier in the week I had been worried the 'blizzard' snow would melt here as it usually does not too long after a storm. So I'm especially digging it now because recently I've had this compelling urge to x-country ski as much as possible.

nye 06/07

Well the second storm wasn't nearly as debilitating as the last and unfortunately most of the snow missed the mountains. After getting some new barrels for my poles and enjoying some grub at the southern sun friday, hit up north boulder park again saturday for some more x-country ski action. New barrels made a world of differnece because now I had something to push off of while skating.

Post ski, steph and I ran errands and then headed to DIA to pick up J&D returning from CT. Fairly routine pickup as most of the airport storm delay madness had subsided. Grabbed a bite at the chilis by milo, and called it a night. After all, we had to rest up for our new year's soiree in the mountains.

Sunday we headed up to breck and set up camp at the breckenridge brewery since we really didn't have a place of our own. We soon met up with the bisagnano clan. I hadn't seen Jen since high school graduation or something crazy so that was cool. We couldn't all hang out in their mini hotey room while they got ready so dylan, steph & I soundclashed the broncos game with some middle school mtv-watching geeks in the lobby (the broncos wound up blowing it anyway). Then we headed to mary's condo where a bunch of jacq's dayton pals were staying the week. Played cards, ate 6 or 7 pizzas, then headed out to Catch the fireworks over the mountain. Post works we tore up some lame bar for a while, then rang in the new year back at the condo 'til the wee hours. Damage report = a bench?
