breeders digest

The Breeders have put out only four albums in their 18 year existence and tour as infrequently, so I was pretty stoked to see them at the Ogden last night. Steph picked us up some cheba hut subs for dinner, then we hit the reoad. The show started early, so we missed the opener entirely. It wasn't very crowded (they even closed off the balcony) so we were able to get a nice spot near the front. The Deal twins were in good spirits and executed their material rather well, including a handful of Amps tunes, and covers of fellow Dayton bands, Guided by Voices and the Tasties.

part of the community

You'd think I'd get sick of seeing shows, but lately there have been a bunch of bands coming to town that are worth seeing. And last friday we were lucky enough to get a little blast from the past by the name of Swervedriver stopping by the Marquis Theater. Steph & I got into denver early so we grabbed some slices in the convenient pizza annex of the Marquis then went across the street to some irish pub. We watched the Rox game on the flatscreen with a view of the stadium lights in the background which was kind of neat. Went back to the Marquis just as the opener (The Life and Times?) was finishing up. Swerdriver came on a short time later and was just as good as the other two times I caught them back in '93 opening for Ned's Atomic Dustbin and then the Smashing Pumpkins (both shows were at the Center Stage randomly enough). Tonight they played a bit of everything from their 4 albums along with a handful of b-sides. It was really dark at the Marquis:

Saturday morning I slept in since it had been muggy all week and kind of threw my sleep pattern off. Then I headed over to jacq's where we made a nice batch of sangria and rode our bikes down to the Creek Fest and were part of the community. Got some killer BBQ at the booth steph was helping out at then we went to old chicago's so she could eat something besides bbq. On the bike ride home on the dark path we stumbled upon, and quickly turned around from, some homeless guy getting wailed on by some beefcake. There was already a group of folks around so there was no sense getting involved since the cops soon arrived.

Sunday we had a little Q at steph's then went and saw the new Indiana Jones film which was decent enough entertainment. We were taking it easy since the girls were all running bright and early the next morning in the Bolder Boulder, and I was dropping them off at the start of the race.

The weather on monday couldn't have been worse, it got cold and rainy for the race, but we all soldiered on, but left pretty after the girls all finished and headed to hillside for an indoor Q with the fam.

things & things

Arrived at class on thursday to find out it had been cancelled. Bad, because I'd already written the first paper and had mentally prepared for my studies. Good, because hey - no class!

The next afternoon I met up with my dad on campus at some guitar auction. Something something tax deductible, etc. Anyway, I helped my dad pick out this swanky new gibson j-150. I guess there were only 24 ever made and only 12 with the natural finish (the other 12 were sunburst). Apparently this is the model that was featured in the film august rush which I may have to watch now out of curiosity.

After work I headed over to the Bear, and steph whipped up a feast and we watched Scoop. The next morning we rode our bikes down to savers and I bought a pair of shorts, since it had gotten rather warm and all I had were the same pair of pants I wore to work the day before. Then we headed over to the foundry rooftop and met up with the gang for some bevies. During our thirst quenching endeavours, I headed over to urban's and picked up the ugly track jacket I've been waiting to go on clearance. It was too ridiculous looking to pay good money for, but an essential item nonetheless.

Then it was off to denver for me & steph to go see Tapes 'N Tapes with the tickets I'd scored after I found out class was cancelled. We had some dinner across the street at the Mezcal before the show. Les cassettes have vastly improved from when we first saw them. They have their second album under their belt, and it's bad-assness has manifested in their live show - hooray for the tapes!

After the show we hurried back to boulder to sync up with everyone at chris's new house on Balsam for a kegger. The address was all wrong but then we happened upon a kegger on Balsam. We went in but it looked like the party was dying off, and we didn't see anyone we knew so we left. Only to find out the next day, while hanging out at steph's mom's place, that we were at the wrong house. Ooops.

muto

I can only imagine how many cans of white spray paint this guy went through. That and how much time this must have taken. Pretty impressive:

feastend

With school starting up again and a paper already due for the first class, it was chill weekend mode. Stephanie came over friday and cooked up a wicked feast of scallop/shrimp/prosciutto kabobs in a rum/butter/shallot sauce, a sweet potato/mango side dish, and plenty of dark & stormys. Saturday I did schoolwork, went for a run, then later in the evening we grilled some chicken and watched sweeny todd which was mighty bloody but mighty boring.

Sunday morning we prepared a mother's day breakfast for my mom. My sisters & I all spent different parts of the day with her & my dad which was something new we tried this year. That way my mom could have mother's day all day long. For breakfast we had a mint fruit salad, pancakes with vanilla syrup, sausage, and these wicked champagne drinks. You fill half to 2/3 a glass with champagne, the rest with pear juice, then a jigger of raspberry liquor and it creates a nifty layered effect. Go ahead and try it out sometime, I think you'll enjoy it.

tres de mayo

Grabbed some slices on the way to steph's new place, then we hopped on the bus downtown to pearl where we were syncing up with a happy hour group at the kitchen upstairs for jacq's b-day. After a while we went next door to bacaro where it was a bit less crowded, then to euro 7 where we didn't stay long. I got fuentes lost driving me back to bear mountain.

Saturday I took in a showing of Iron Man which was good and entertaining. Then grabbed a bite at snarf's and went over to jacq's for a little bit of pre before we all headed over to stephanie & claire's place for a tres de mayo party. Complete with a feast, beer pong, a bonfire, and plenty of cerveza. Things didn't really get crazy until the wigs & funny hats came out...

after

Sunday was casual, I watched some dvdtrons and lounged about before syncing up with the fam at Radda for the encore to jacq's b-day week(end).

the teaches of piggy

- Boooo!
- That was the worst thing I ever heard!
- It was terrible!
- Horrendous!
- Well, it wasn't that bad.
- Oh yeah?
- There were parts of it I liked.
- Yeah, I liked a lot of it.
- Yeah, it was good, actually.
- It was great!
- It's wonderful!
- Ah, bravo!
- More!
