marcato in nederland

Friday I grilled out some chick and steph put it to good use in this pasta dish with a gorgonzola/basil sauce. Delicious. I tried a new Hop Stupid brew and we watched Dodgeball. Nobody makes me bleed my own blood!

dinner

Saturday afternoon, we went to a bbq at Megill's for a while, then I met with my good pals Marcato & Freeman who were en route to LA from Boston. It was great to see those guys after how ever many odd years. We all headed up to a campout party Mark Wesson had organized just past Nederland. It was a fun group of about 20 or so folks. The party was kind of last minute so our preparations were sparse but included the necessities of kielbasa, short ribs, water & beer. Next thing we knew, it was starting to get lighter out, so I hit the hay post-haste.

After a few hours sleep we mowed some breakfast and I got a ride back down the canyon with Katy, since Marcato et al were heading back on the road. Went home to wash the camp off, and then met up with Steph and headed to the Grove for some pool action. Capped off the weekend with some pretty tasty cheese stuffed, bacon wrapped shrimp on the barby for dinner.

rain/bow

Besides being the month of the obit, June has been exceptionally rainy along the front range. But all the rain has brought some killer rainbows. Here's a nice double we saw after dinner at Casa Alegre one sunday evening:

the king is dead, all hail the king

The self-proclaimed king of pop, Michael Jackson has just died from cardiac arrest, confirmed by the LA Times. Mama-se, mama-sa, mama-coo-sa!

mj

Although still somewhat shocking, it happened well past his creative peak in the later stages of wackness.

bad orb

My post graduation plans originally included an Orb show at the Fox saturday night, but we got word that their entire U.S. was cancelled a couple weeks earlier but had no idea why. Today, the news has just broken that Andy Hughes, who had worked with the band on Orbvs Terrarvm, Orblivion, and Cydonia, passed away on June 12th from a liver disease. Absolute bummer.

graduation et al

Woohoo - I graduated on saturday! The ceremony was at the convention center in Denver, and afterwards we had a celebratory drink in the lounge at the top of the Hyatt accross the street.

Later that evening we had dinner at Pasta J's so Steph could carbo load for her triathalon the next morning. I watched a great Iron Maiden documentary, Flight 666, about their recent world tour. Their lead singer Bruce Dickinson flew their custom 737 to every show - pretty hardcore.

Got to the boulder rez bright and early to catch the start of the race, as well as all of the transitions. Steph was amongst some of the first women out of the water and placed pretty high in her age group, and also won a case of Avery beer in a raffle - congrats!

After the race we headed to hillside for a graduation / father's day BBQ. Yard games were in full effect - badminton, croquet, bocce & pétanque.

georgia theatre burns

The Georgia Theatre in Athens caught fire earlier this morning and is pretty much gutted inside. I saw some great shows there, notably from Ween & a bunch from STS9.

robyn & jesse / westword

Saturday afternoon we all met up at El Centro for Jesse & Robyn's wedding reception. The food was excellent and the drinks were flowing. The rain occasionally threatened to put a damper on things, but was mostly just a sprinkle here and there.

After the reception, steph & I hightailed it to Denver to the Westword Music Showcase. We met up with Robert & Angie in time for the evening's headliner Built to Spill. A solid set, although slightly abbreviated due to the festival setting.

wine & cheese

Saturday morning we went to denver to help Steph's sorority with their estate sale. They are renting the building out to a frat while they are dormant, so pretty much everything had to go. There were some differing opinions about pricing amongst the ladies, but I pretty much took any offer just to get rid of stuff. They wound up with a bunch leftover, so they'll have to have another sale. That evening we went to a wine & cheese party at Keith & Cheri's hut. The evening started out nice and refined, but as per usual descended into eventful rowdiness.

camera obscura

Went to the Camera Obscura show at the Bluebird last night. Monday's are a tough night to go out, but I won the tix on the radio so that's always a nice incentive. They played to a pretty full room, focusing mostly on material from their two most recent albums - a nice casual show.

posters

Finally got around to checking out the Psychedelic Poster Experience exhibit at the Denver Art Museum on saturday. It featured 'dance concert' posters from the San Francico area circa 1965-71. They had a pretty impressive collection of artist prints including these:
