eleven

Wow, how about those Rockies - eleven straight wins! They're coming into their final homestand against the 1st place Diamondbacks starting tonight. If they sweep, they will either clinch a playoff spot or have to play a tie-breaker to determine a divisional win or wild-card spot, depending on how all the other teams in the pennant race perform. The different possible match-ups are too numerous to list, so let's just hope they keep up the fire.

les chem bros

Denver has seen a good share of big name electronic acts pass through recently. Last night we were privvy to a visit from the Chemical Brothers. Stephanie had a test, so she met me down at the fillmore after the opener, the Faint, who never cease to not amaze me. She was the lucky one. It baffles me how these guys are popular. I suppose they are somewhat revolutionary, if it was still 1983. The brothers Chem had quite the racks of gear and a nifty lcd mesh backdrop and lots of lasers, certainly more ellaborate than when I first caught them twiddling knobs downstairs at the Masquerade at 3 am (but not nearly as jaw-dropping as the brothers Daft, the new litmus test for light shows). Regardless, it was a block rockin' good time and by the end of the night I was up in the front row pumping my fist like I was at an AC/DC concert. I had 'The Golden Path' stuck in my head this morning, but I decided to make it into a country song when I sang it instead - "Please forgive me, I never meant to beat you."

Oh yeah, and about halfway through the 2 hour show during 'star guitar' they blew a fuse and the music came to a screeching halt for 5 minutes or so, not unlike that scene from Airplane where the guy unplugs the runway lights. The visuals of lots of close ups of eyeballs kept on going though which was kind of creepy with dead silence. This is an approximate setlist:

No Path To Follow
Galvanize
Burst Generator
Do it Again
Get Yourself High
Hey Boy, Hey Girl
All Rights Reversed
Krafty Numbers
Out Of Control
Don't Fight Control
Temptation / Star Guitar
Surface To Air
Under The Infuence
Saturate
Believe
We Are The Night
Acid Children
Chemical Beats

vs. miami ohio

I completely vegged out on the couch friday night, and watched the rockies finally beat the padres in the 14th inning. Got up bright and early and headed to jacq's to meet up with everyone for some tailgate action. We started the morning off with some mimosas, then geared up and got on the bus. It must be quite a site when 4 people pile onto the bus with lawnchairs, all kinds of food, and a cooler on wheels. A few moments later we arrived at the new tailgate spot, which I'm still not 100% stoked on, mainly due to lack of the fun playing field nearby. It gets a little crowded when we whip out the ladder golf. It was an earlier game this week and we got inside late, then left early - we decided it would be more fun shotgunning 8 oz CL's back at the tailgate area. And we were playing Miami Ohio - it was a total blowout, we won 45-0 or something. Let's hope they can keep up that offense against OU this coming weekend.

Somehow we made it back to jacq's without getting hit by a car, and I had the hiccups for way too long until we cooked up some leftover pizza. Steph was crashed out the couch, so we headed back to her place around 8pm or so. The next morning when we went back to jacq's to pick up steph's car, all the blinds were pulled and the house was completely dark. Normally they are up bright and early. I guess they made it down to pearl street and kept the party rolling well into the morning since utah derrick was visiting. We headed back to my place and stephanie made some breakfast and then, a little later on, some lunch before taking off to meet up with jacq to go run 10 miles for their 1/2 marathon training. I did some homework and watched the most brilliantly funny Star Wars Family Guy.

tailgate time

It was a bleak weekend for the red sox, and the loss on friday was especially gruelling after watching the game for 4 1/2 hours. Luckily stephanie made some killer chicken marsala for dinner so the night wasn't a total bust.

Saturday was CU's firts home game against FSU. So I bought a case of beer and headed to j&d's, where we all took the bus to campus to sync up with the tailgate crew. Our spot kind of moved since they finished construction and sodded the parking next to the field. Not sure if I love the new space yet. Brody hooked me up with a student ticket, so we head to head in early. The fans were encouraged to wear black for a 'blackout', since the game was on ESPN. Our defense held FSU to 16, but we couldn't put any points on the board ourselves until it was too late to matter. It did not help that we missed two field goals along the way. Took the bus back to stepahnie's after the game, ordered up a pizza, and called it a night.

blackout

Did some homework & watched the broncos (barely) win on sunday, before another crushing red sox loss later that evening. Similar to friday, the saving grace was a good dinner - this time some grilled coho salmon that curt brought back from alaska.

7000 folks off

On tuesday, Underworld was in town for one of only 6 U.S. appearances. It was originally meant to be at red rocks but was moved to the Fillmore at the last minute due to poor ticket sales (we had comps thanks to Fuentes, so a small part of that blame could be put on us, in theory...) The band felt really bad about the venue switch and prior to the show let everyone know that they would receive a copy of their new cd in the mail when it is released. The show started off kind of slow, but picked up steam along the 2+ hour set and finished pleasantly with the lead off track from my fave album, beaucoup fish.

built to bronz

Another friday, another show. I scooped up some freebies from the radio for the Built to Show at the Fox. Steph & I grabbed some dinner at illegal pete's in the middle of Hillfest, which was a welcome back block party type dealio for the kiddies returning to class. It was mostly a ton of sk8er boiz flailing on ramps. But they also had a stage set up and we caught some of the Hot IQs set.

I was all geared up to tape and showed up at doors, but was bizarrely turned away? I figured there was just some miscommunication, so we went to the Sink for a couple of brews to pass the time. Checked again - still no taping. Oh well, we stopped by Rose Hill for another brew and packed up the gear back in the car. Made it in just before the BTS set, bumped into a classmate and then my pal sean from the Springs who is an avid collector of my BTS tapes. We figured out that the band must be gearing up for another official 'live' release of their own, clued in by the ambient mics placed on either side of the stage. Sean was going to stay in the local hostel so we invited him back to crash at steph's.

(it should be noted that they did not play 'stab')

Jacq & dylan came over saturday afternoon then we all headed to denver for joaquin's b-day bash. It was a throwdown - everyone was having a blast. His band, the Bronz, blew the walls off the living room. During their setbreak, I popped in the Friends EP, and people got up on the mic and sang along - out of control. All 8 cases of cheap beer were polished off and most of the food devoured when we left, which was only around 11pm or so. Nothing like a knock down drag out house party to put things into perspective.

notoriously laborious

Kicked off labor day weekend friday night with some bbq and an Apples in Stereo show in denver. Stephanie was sly enough to win some tix from the radio. Had some tasty margs (seems like I'm always drinking those lately) at a joint across the street from the Bluebird. I didn't bother with taping this time, since my last pull came out great and it was too soon since the last show for them to have radically altered their setlist. It was fun not taping since we were able to get up close and dance around.

Football began early the next morning with the CU/CSU game at Mile High in denver. We opted to just watch over at hillside with the fam since it started ass early at 10am. It was certainly a nailbiter, but CU eeked out the win with a field goal in overtime. Not having gotten much sleep the night before we just chilled and watched some more college games and Blades of Glory back at my place before crafting up some dank taco burgers for dinner.

Sunday morning I went to sniagrab (the big ski gear sale) with paul so he could get some new skis this season. We were inspired and he wound up getting new bindings, a jacket, pants, and a helmet too. Then he dropped me off at St. Julien where I was meeting up with steph for our friend jen's birthday brunch. Thirty bucks will get you all you can eat (and drink!) from a huge spread all fancy like. After about the 10th round of mimosas (we had to make sure we got beyond our $$ worth), we made way to the aspen groves to kick it poolside one last time before pool season ended. Then somehow we ended up riding go-carts up in NoBo somewhere which was totally out of hand. I insisted that I brought along the boombox inside the cart and cranked out 'friends' while (somewhat intentionally) hitting several of the tires that line the sides of the course.

Monday was kind of a chilled out veg day. Thought about doing homework, but instead wound up watching the clemson/FSU game on the tele that GW & Bob were attending in the flesh.
