xmas et al

Worked a half day on xmas eve, and got a chicken chucker from one of my co-workers. I spent a good portion of the day seeing just how many chickens I could chuck at once before heading to hillside for dinner. After dinner steph & I went back to my place and opened our gifts. Highlights include a companion speaker for my tivoli and a butter cutter which slices the perfect pad every time.

Christmas morning we reconvened at hillside for brunch and family gift opening. Highlights include practical items such as a fireplace tool set as well as a regular tool set. On boxing day, we celebrated round three of xmas back at hillside, this time with jacquie & dylan who had been in connecticut.

Friday night GW came over and we sampled holiday/winter brews for a bit before calling it an early night and syncing up again in the AM to head to breckenridge. It was hella windy, and there were white out conditions along 93 so we detoured through arvada to I-70. It was just as windy and bitterly cold on the mountain, so after we had a hearty breakfast, we were only able to get in about 5 runs before calling it a day and heading home. We had thought about going up again sunday, but luckily we did not. Spent most of the day just cleaning up, running errands and watching the broncos win then the buffs lose to alabama in the Independence Bowl.

I picked up a variety of holiday/winter brews on friday and had a fairly chill evening. Early saturday morning GW came by and we picked up paul before heading to Keystone. It was way cold and I drove half blind most of the way there because my windshield wiper fluid had become slushy. There were several fresh inches and I spent most of my time tracking freshies in the wooded areas. A solid day on the slopes. Later that night steph and I had dinner on pearl street then headed to the Broker Inn for a free night's stay that steph had won from work. Sunday we took advantage of their champagne brunch then headed back to milo to catch the Pats game and watch Oceans 13 which was more enjoyable than I thought it would be.

thickly vailed

Got out of work a bit early friday for our company xmas party over at one of the boss's huts. They had a nice spread of aps and some great chili. The only alcohol they had however was 3 bottles of well-aged scotch and a handle of crown, most all of which was consumed - pretty hardcore. After two glasses of scotch I needed to ease it back a bit. Luckily I discovered a cooler on the back patio in which all the ice had melted and then re-froze into a solid block encasing a bunch of dogfish head and coronas - I had to carve them out, but they were intact. The party was over pretty early and I came out of it with use of the vail condo that weekend - extremely convenient since we were planning on riding vail saturday anyway.

Bright and early saturday morning we all met at dylan's and took the greg & andy mobile to the mountains. We had fresh snow from the day/night before and most of the mountain was open. We rode all over, eventually making our way back to the Blue Sky Basin. It was a cold one with a high of 13 degrees, but it was clear. Our last run of the day we decided to hike the outer ridge of the basin which turned out to be quite difficult since the snow was so fresh and we kept sinking up to our shins/knees/waist with most steps. An hour later we reached the summit. After the grueling hike, the run down was so worth it - deep & untouched (that's what she said). After heading into town to stock up on brews & foods & woods, we played uno for several hours before passing out watching a movie. We were all kind of beat sunday morning so we had a relaxing breakfast thanks to steph, and then headed back before traffic.

tick tock

Boulder, home of the world's most accurate clock. Housed in the NIST building along the west side of south Broadway, practically accross the street from jacq's place. I wonder if they have a kickin' new year's countdown? Full story here.

iron & snow

What was meant to be a casual friday evening turned into a crazy few hours as we partook in some happy festivities in celebration of GW's b-day. A couple of gordons from the kitchen upstairs and 3 rio margs, and a frozen pizza later I found myself asleep on my couch by 10-ish. The original plan was to sync up with greg back at his place, but I never quite made it. The rest of the gang ended up in various states back at jacq's.

Good thing it was an early night because the next morning we all had to help lauren move into her new place. It had been snowing all night and continued on throughout the move, but with the help of a budget truck we were done by early afternoon. The steph came over and we headed to denver to catch Iron & Wine at the paramount. The drive in took an hour longer than usual - the roads were horrible and everyone was driving slow, which was certainly practical though. We anticipated the delay and still had plenty of time to grab some dinner at rock bottom. The paramount is a sit-down theatre and we had nabbed 2nd row center tickets which were killer. Then out of nowhere one half of Devotchka (Nick & Tom) took the stage as the opener - quite a surprise as they were not originally on the bill. They put on a great performance of stripped-down material. Iron & Wine had been traveling as a full band on this tour, but apparently the snow hindered their drive from salt lake the night before, and only Sam Beam made it and treated us to a solo show covering a good portion of his catalog quite masterfully.

Got home to sleep by 1am, then woke up 3 1/2 hours later to sync up with the guys and head to A-Basin. GW picked me up with kahlua coffees in hand and then we swung by dylan's and we were on the road by 5.30, which was instrumental in avoiding I-70 traffic which had been bogged down right before the tunnel where they were down to one lane for emergency bridge repairs. Parked on the beach at 7.30 and had plenty of time for breakfast. A great first day with plenty of dumps had us worn out and on the road home by noon or so.

boom bicycles

boom bicycle

"A new biker gang is roaming the streets of Richmond Hill, Queens. This crew of mostly teenagers can be seen riding along 103rd Avenue just west of the Van Wyck Expressway. The bikes roar, but the booming sound has nothing to do with engines — because there are no engines. They are ordinary bicycles, not motorcycles, although these contraptions look and sound more like rolling D.J. booths. They are outfitted with elaborate stereo systems installed by the youths."

return of the mac

GW returned to colorado last thursday, right down the street. We had a quick dinner at one of the many mexican joints in bustling downtown lafayette then called it a night. I was coming off the tail end of being sick so I took it easy friday night, just staying in and crashing early. SaturdayI went over to GW's new hut and we cracked open a celebratory Donkey Punch, which made the trip from georgia. Then we headed to jacq's to watch the Missouri/Oklahoma game before going to Tahona for some drinks & dancing. Sunday was casual, steph & I caught a matinee of No Country for Old Men which was badass - I highly recommend it.
