inaugural friday night lights

Friday after work we met up with GW at the Bear and then headed up to Keystone for the inaugural Friday Night Lights free concert series. Since there hasn't been any real decent snow yet, this was the first time we'd been up since the end of last season. Tonight's band was Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. The stage was located over by the River Run condos near the base of the new gondola which they moved across the river. It was cold as heck up there, and and first it was pretty empty for the show, but as soon as the lifts stopped running it filled up quite a bit. CYHSY played a great set despite their fingers prolly being near frostbite. We had nowhere to stay, so after the show we just drove home, which was kinda long but totally worth it.

Saturday I did some homework during the day, then we went over to andy's so steph could learn how to feed the fishes & cats while they go out of town. It soon turned into a dance party, but we called it a pretty early night. Sunday I had more homework, then steph came over for dinner.

elf power & vic

Elf Power & Vic Chesnutt performed at the Hi-Dive last night. I was kind of on the fence about this show for a while, mainly because I wasn't quite sure how the line-up would go. But then I scored some free tix so Steph & I headed to the show. Elf Power opened the show with a solid set of their own material, took a break, and then were joined onstage by Vic and played a set of material from their new collaborative album, Dark Developments - essentially Vic singing and Elf Power playing all the instruments (save for some of Vic's occasional guitar accompaniment). The material sounded pretty good live and Vic knew how to work the crowd. We were really there for the Elf Power bits and Vic's cranky yowling can get to be a bit much so we split during his solo encore. On the way out I bumped into Laura Carter who was notably absent from their set at P-Fork over the summer. She explained that her and Andy had just been given a house for $1 and it required quite a bit of fixing up so she had been busy with that. Like a dumbass, I forgot to ask where their new house was, but I can only assume it's in Athens...

double O doom metal karoke weekend

Friday night we all met up at the Catina at 29th street to have a marg or two before Quantum of Solace. It turned into a marg or 4, and by the time we got to the theatre all that was left were seats in the 2nd row. We realized these were not going to cut it during the opening sequence, and promptly left and got rain checks. Went back to steph's and watched Iron Man and tried out some new brews (reviews to come, hopefully...)

Did a little home work saturday, then we all met up on campus for a little tailgate action with fuentes for her 30th b-day. None of us had tix to the game and it started getting cold, so we had a mexican rave in the car until fuentes decided she wanted to go into the game (I guess she had a ticket afterall).

mexican rave

Then headed to andy's to eat some wild game brats his neighbor made. And then suddenly during my Katy Perry impression it turned into doom metal karoke night, which was quite possibly the funniest thing ever.

Sunday we caught the 007 matinee. Daniel Craig is excellent as Bond. I agree with some of the reviews that it's a bit action-y and not your standard campy bond fair, but it was still kick ass in its own right. I did some more homework, and then steph made a killer meat loaf dinner and we watched tele programs on the lappy.

ruggles

Last night we headed to some strange suburb in between denver and evergreen to pick up steph's new cat she inherited from her sister, whose son had alergies or su'in. He's about 8 years old, with a cool black circular/stripe pattern, which is hard to discribe (and hard to discern in the photo). He made the transition to steph's place almost immediately. We also changed his name to Ruggles, named after the T stop on the orange line in Boston. Previous T names my family has used for their cats were Porter, Kenmore, and Copley.

drums of death

It's a bad time to be an aging drummer. Last week we lost Frank Zappa's original drummer from the Mothers of Invention, Jimmy Carl Black - "The Indian of the Group":

And now Mitch Mitchell of the Jimi Hendrix Experience has just passed:

If you believe that things like this come in threes, then who's next?

This theme song would make a slammin disco house track. I loved this show, especially the Bloodhound Gang.

basement bowl

Friday after work I headed to the bear to chill out and watch the tele/dvdtrons with steph. Saturday morning we got up early and rode our bikes down to campus and met up with everyone at the alumni tent for the CU / Iowa State game. The 'basement brawl' or whatever the paper was calling the match up of two worst teams in the Big XII was pretty boring during the scoreless first half for the Buffs. In the second half, they put Cody back in as QB and we scored 4 touchdowns and a 2 point conversion. We won the game 28-24 in the last second by holding Iowa State on the 1 yard line. Our kicker should have his scholarship revoked, as he missed more field goals and an extra point... oh well, we'll take the win!

After the game we all headed over to mountain sun for some brews & munchies. Then we did a little shopping on pearl on our way back to steph's where we watched another dvdtron.

Sunday we finally caught up with this season's Dexter, and steph went to the gym while I hiked around Bear Mountain and NCAR.

sm & jycks

It's been a busy week, good thing my next class doesn't start up until the 18th! Last night steph and I ventured south to the Gothic for a healthy dose of Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks. First up was Blitzen Trapper who were pretty cool in an 'indie rock version of CSNY' kind of way, very retro classical rock vibe, akin to Fleet Foxes but peppier. At the end of their set, SM and Janet Weiss joined them onstage for a Steve Miller Band cover.

The Jicks were awesome and Stephen was in a dapper mood which always helps. Janet Weiss (formerly of Sleater Kinney) was a nice addition on drums. The set focused mostly on material from the newest album, which is some of his best recent work, so that was great.

For the encore we were graced by the Blitzen gang again and everyone participated on some jammed out versions of Marvin Gaye's 'I Heard it through the Grapevine' and 'Funk 49' by the James Gang - wicked!

can I kick it?

Yes we can!

Steph hosted an election party at the Bear last night and prepared a great spread of apps. We also had a bunch of patriotic beer, such as Sam Adams, Anchor Liberty, and the Deschutes Dissident.

party people

Once Obama was a lock, we started a spirited game of 'smack the bitch' with our favorite effigy pictured below. Here are the rules for those who have never played: Hold the wine bladder up with one hand, give it a good smack or two with the other, then hold it up and pour some wine in your mouth. Fun for everybody!

halloweekend

Friday after work we headed down to colfax and checked into the beat up ramada we occasionally call home, costumed up, then walked over to Tres Margaritas to grab dinner with some of greg's pals. After dinner and a round of mega-ritas, we went to that hippy bar over by the fillmore for a round before heading over to the Ogden for Girl Talk. Colfax was kind of crazy as there was a Leftover Salmonella show at the Fillmore as well - everyone was dressed up. We got to the Ogden just as the non-remarkable opener was finishing up and got a place down near the front.

3 blind mice

Steph & I soon vacated for a space up in the balcony where we could at least dance with a brew in hand and avoid bumping into the way pilled up kiddies. Girl Talk worked the crowd well, mixing in a similar style to his discs, and effectively created an hour long encore of craziness as seen here in this accidental video steph took:

We tried to get a pizza after the show, but didn't quite work out, so we stocked up on gas station nutrition, and goofed around in the hotey room until we passed out. Saturday we headed back to milo, steph made a kick ass breakfast pizza and we just hung out, watched some movies & tele, etc. Sunday I worked on my final group paper & presentation for this class and picked up my weight bench from hillside for a study break.
